The first month of new Islamic -Hijri- year 1439 (Muhurram) will start Thursday, Sep 21th, 2017, according to astronomical calculations.

Muslims across the world have already been marking the Islamic New Year, the beginning of the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. “Muharram” is the second holiest month after Ramadan.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which fighting are prohibited by Allah. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.

The festival of Muharram has significant religious importance for Muslims, of which the first day is known as the Islamic New Year. Each year, the holiday falls on a different day because as the Islamic calendar is 11 or 12 days shorter than the solar calendar used in Western countries.
