“Eid al-Fitr” or Feast of breaking the fast, it is a religious festival in which Muslims are celebrating the end of “Ramadan”, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The feast start depends on the observation of the new moon by local religious authorities, so it is the end of Ramadan and the start of the lunar Hijri month “Shawwal” .
On this feast, Muslims are encouraged to forgive and forget any differences with others. At the first day of feast, Muslims get up very early in the morning, always before sunrise. they get cleaned and dressed their best clothes and start gathering in large halls and mosques.
As it is forbidden to fast on the first day of feast, It is customary to acknowledge this with a small sweet breakfast, preferably of Date ( Fruit), before attending the special Eid prayer ” Salaat El-Eid”.
As an obligatory act of charity, money is paid to the poor and the needy , a corner of Islam called ” Zakat El-Fitr”.
In Egypt, Eid al-Fitr is a three-day official vacation in which people decorate their houses , visit each other , enjoy the parks and cinemas and enjoy cooking “Fatta” , a traditional Egyptian dish of rice and meat. Also they bake ” Ka’ak” a traditional cookies filled with nuts or dates and covered with powdered sugar.
